“…And We Go Ahhhhhhh / Like a Raisin in The Sun /…. “

(…that’s how the song goes, right?)

Coming up next at the Huntington, Liesl Tommy is returning to direct the classic A Raisin In The Sun, a play which I probably don’t need to tell you anything about because you’ve already read it. But here’s a video I made of our Artistic Director Peter DuBois talking about what makes this production special (including a mention of Bevin’s next project, the Boston premiere of last year’s Tony Award winner Clybourne Park for SpeakEasy Stage).

A Raisin In The Sun plays March 8 – April 7, 2013 at the Avenue of the Arts / BU Theatre, and Clybourne Park runs March 1 – 30, 2013 at the South End / Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA.

  1. Great video Thom! How neat that Boston audiences will get to experience these two plays together. Both ran in LA last year and seeing them in tandem gave me better insight and more appreciation for each one. I’d seen RAISIN on Broadway years ago, but I felt like I was watching it with new eyes this time — and it completely bowled me over. Actually, like with Our Town, I immediately bought the text so I could absorb it more fully. It’s shocking how young Lorraine Hansberry was when she wrote it, given the depth and range of the play, and what a tremendous loss to the theater world that she died shortly thereafter. And while it’s less deep than RAISIN, I thoroughly enjoyed Clybourne Park. What an honor that Bevin is directing! Very cool!

  2. Thanks, Erica! Aw, you’re the best. Bevin actually has a relationship with Bruce Norris, so when the producing rights came up in Boston, he specifically asked that she direct it, which is pretty cool. I think it’ll be a neat conversation between the 2 pieces. I know a little bit about what Liesl Tommy has in mind for RAISIN, but either way, she’s always good about re-imagining things and making them older plays relevant. When she did MA RAINEY’S for us last year, the show actually started with some modern hip-hop style, Fubu wear and Kanye etc, before turning back into a period piece.

Also now I miss OUR TOWN again, haha.

  3. Wow, what an honor to be hand-picked by Bruce Norris. And I’ll keep an eye out when the RAISIN run starts to see what Liesl Tommy does with it — the stills from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in your video look awesome.
